Description

Abraxas Ensemble, founded in 2022 by young musicians from the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne, is dedicated to the performance of contemporary and 20th-century music.

After its inaugural concert in March 2022, which launched the "grand ensemble" concert series, Abraxas Ensemble now presents its first concert in the "Abraxas décomposé" series, in a smaller formation.

The programme opens with Three Passions for our Tortured Planet for solo piano, composed by Brian Field. The piece was written to raise awareness of climate change, and has since become a musical movement in the service of the environment. For more information, here is the movement's website: https://passionsforourtorturedplanet.org/

With percussionist Aurélien Perdreau, the concert continues with Conversation Intime for piano and percussion by Luc Ferrari — a piece that, in the composer's own words, arose from a "desire to make two such dissimilar instruments speak to one another." He offers them, in other words, "a conversation in which they might intimately intertwine."

At the end of the concert, returning to the first half of the 20th century, violinists Emile Abeille and Francesco Venudo will play Sergei Prokofiev's Sonate pour deux violons en ut majeur op. 56, a landmark of the two-violin repertoire.
